Pangea began in SA two years ago as an independent outsourcing agency to Englishtown, an online-English learning programme. Englishtown offers a self-study grammar course, which is supported by live conversation classes. There are currently 3 million students from countries all around the world registered with the programme.

The 45-minute conversation classes are offered 24/7, and are hosted by teachers strategically based around the world. There are other centres in Bali, Shanghai and India, though the SA centre is responsible for hosting approximately one third of all the general conversation classes currently offered. Using VOIP, PowerPoint presentations, and specially designed virtual classrooms, teachers are able to lead live conversations. Using additional tools provided in the classroom, teachers present visual stimulation in the form of typed grammar, paraphrasing, vocabulary, colloquialisms, drawings etc, thereby enhancing the learning experience.

The teachers’ job is one of enormous responsibility: many students are studying for the IELTS & TOEFL exams (required for entrance into an English-speaking university), so they need advanced grammatical and English-skills support. Accordingly, a teacher must have a thorough knowledge of the English language, and be able to impart that knowledge in a clear and logical manner. It is also preferred that the teacher has completed some tertiary training, such as an undergraduate degree.
