CTEC 2010 opens for registration

24 February 2010 – Just a reminder that the Cape Town Entrepreneurship Competition 2010 is now open and accepting applications. The aim of the competition is to expand entrepreneurship in Cape Town. The competition forms part of the City of Cape Town’s strategy to position Cape Town as a leading enabler of entrepreneurship on the African continent and to build a stronger entrepreneurship ecosystem. The competition is open to idea stage entrepreneurs, startup and growth companies in three categories – Biotechnology & Healthcare, Clean Technology and ICT, Telecoms & Media.

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009 was a huge success! With activities in 88 official countries, the Week reached millions of people. Numbers are still coming in from around the world, but it's clear that participants topped 7 million, with more than 32,000 activities taking place.

M-banking in Africa

Below are interesting statistics from ITWeb All Africa News regarding mobile banking on the African continent.

According to Gartner:

  • In Africa, there are 300 million reachable adults that currently have no access to formal financial services.
  • Mobile payment users will reach 74.4 million in 2009, an increase of 70% over the 43 million users in 2008.
  • In 2012, that number should exceed 190 million users

Chris Vermeulen, 16 November 2009 - Small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs) have been attracting a great deal of attention from policy makers the world over in recent years. In the new world economy and digital age marked by rapid globalisation, new opportunities are opening up for small firms, which are increasingly seen as a major source of vitality, flexibility and, not least, a key source of new job opportunities.

At the same time, it is frequently argued that many barriers exist to the creation and further development of SMMEs, either in the marketplace or induced by governments, thus calling for action from policy makers in order to create an economic environment conducive to such firms (OECD, 1997). Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for over 95% of firms and 60%-70% of employment and generate a large share of new jobs in OECD economies (OECD, 2000).
