A search for an office with an energetic vibe led Livefyre, a company that provides software for posting comments on websites, to undergo a rite of passage for new Silicon Valley businesses. It joined an accelerator, a sort of business academy for startups. For eight months, the team sat in a bullpen with fellow entrepreneurs at KickLabs, one of a long list of accelerators in and around San Francisco. Anyone who needed help could get it from a neighbor or the accelerator’s staff, which regularly doled out advice and arranged meetings with potential investors.

The Entrepreneurship Benchmarking Survey identified five prioritised recommendations for entrepreneurial development in South Africa. Use the "anchor firm" model. This model sees start-ups and small businesses growing as spin-offs from large, established "anchor firms" or new companies emerging to "meet a need from a large enterprise." This model presents particular promise in South Africa, says the Monitor Group, in terms of its potential to stimulate entrepreneurship, secure access to markets for start-ups and create business value through innovation and localization.

WhipTail, a Whippany, N.J.-based flash storage company, has raised $31 million in Series C equity and debt financing. Equity backers include SanDisk, Ignition Partners, RRE Ventures and Spring Mountain Capital, while a the debt came from Silicon Valley Bank. www.whiptail.com. SpotHero, a Chicago-based parking garage reservation startup, has raised $2.5 million in VC funding.
